Cultural / Historical Value:
Rainbow Six: Vegas is one game in the long-running videogame series: Rainbow Six, developed by Tom Clancy. The game was designed after author Tom Clancy’s best-selling novel, Rainbow Six. The videogame was actually finished before the book was released and carries a different plot than the book, but still embodies Tom Clancy’s vision to create a series about American forces combating terrorism. This game has been nominated for and won numerous awards and is highly praised for its multi-player gameplay. There are numerous other Tom Clancy-related videogame titles, such as those within the Splinter Cell and Ghost Recon series.
Teaching / Learning Characteristics:
This game does not offer much in terms of educational content. However, players can learn about military tactics and combating terrorism. This game requires tactical strategy in order to beat the terrorists. Critical thinking skills related to strategizing about warfare are simulated in this title. Finally, like most other shooters, this game requires effective eye-hand coordination for successful play.
There are various difficulty levels available for this game, which adds to the replayability of the title. There are also online multiplayer options available, which add hours of life to the title. Downloadable content, such as the Players Pack Red add schematics and maps for fans of this game.
Fans of Tom Clancy or his various videogame series (such as Ghost Recon or Splinter Cell) will be attracted to the Rainbow Six series. Others who enjoy shooters or military-based multiplayer games will appreciate this game.
